Perhaps not, but it's worth considering. It's something to take back to my colleagues, anyway; more anecdotal data is always welcome.

Well, let's see. There was one world where the British Empire never fell, although it persisted at great cost to the colonised peoples of the world. There was another where Europe was all but destroyed by war, and much of Britain was practically blasted back to the Stone Age. Not all were quite so bleak, mind you. Sometimes the differences might be so subtle that you wouldn't even notice at first; then you might discover that certain well-known people were doing something different than what you knew them for; that sort of thing.

They're not stupid. They call them dæmons. Not demon like devil. I've never gotten the story of how the name was assigned. Usually, they can't be separated very long, and hurting a dæmon would hurt the person as well. They vanish when their human dies, and you're only supposed to touch your own dæmon.

Can a dæmon communicate with other people? With other dæmons?

Yes. I think they usually can only speak whatever languages their human knows, but communicating between dæmons is easier than communicating with people who don't have one in common.

Its shape is supposed to reflect your true nature. So, someone with a dog dæmon is probably loyal and friendly, while someone with a polar bear is more solitary.

Has anyone ever had a fish for a daemon, that you know of? That would seem to be nearly impossible to manage.

Not that I know of. My friend's settled as a pine marten - they change shape, until you become an adult.
